Sputnik Monroe Arrives
The larger than life Sputnik Monroe arrived in Memphis and the city would never be the same. Monroe would soon become
the most hated man in Memphis. Billy Wicks was already on his way to becoming the most popular man in Memphis. A battle was
brewing.

Television
1959 also saw Memphis Wrestling going on TV for the first time. In the summer it debuted on WMC Channel 5 and Memphis sports
announer Jack Eaton was the host. A few months later promoter Buddy Fuller(Welch) oved the show over to WHBQ Channel 13,
where it stayed until March 1977.

Record Match
Billy Wicks and Sputnik Monroe battled each other all sumer long. This card had the destinction of having the highest
attendance record of any wrestling card in the history of Memphis. Officially list at nearly 14,000, people who witnessed the
event say that it was more like 17,000.
